IBU NURLAELATI, a Science teacher at SMPN 2 Rangkasbitung, used cigarette butts in her lesson on competency standard 4 (understanding the use of chemical substances) with basic competency of 4.4. (describing the characteristics of addictive and psychotropic substances).
She distributed cigarettes, cigarette butts and cigarette packets. She asked the students to read the health warning on the cigarette package. She also asked them to compare the color of the filters on the unused cigarettes and with those of the cigarette butts.
After explaining the objective of the lesson, she asked the students to work in groups of 4 or 5. She distributed the learning aids and worksheet and the students discussed the worksheet.
During the class discussion, students from various groups were chosen to give their answers to the questions on the worksheet. The other students gave their opinion and feedback on the answers. The teacher congratulated the group which got the highest score.
After that, each group created a poster against smoking. Each group displayed the poster and other groups made comments on the posters. Finally, she assisted her students to draw conclusions from the lesson and gave them a follow-up assignment.
