SIMULATION: Overcoming the Problem of Passive Students in English Lessons

COOPERATIVE learning is one way for teachers to create active and creative learning. But in practice, teachers are faced with some problems.

These include:
1. Not all students are active in group activities, although they sit in a group.
2. Sometimes learning is not taking place in the groups.

Supartinah, S. Pd, an English teacher at SMP 1 Karanganyar tried one way to overcome these problems, which is specific to teaching English, especially teaching speaking skills. She was teaching the topic Asking and Giving Information through a simulation using a Simulation Board.

This equipment can be made by the teacher. The materials required are all waste materials, including:

  1. Simulation Boards made from old cardboard boxes, about 30 x 30 cm in size, covered with an old paper calendar. The simulation boards have the themes used in the speaking activity stuck on them;
  2. Cards containing lists of questions;
  3. Dice made from old rubber erasers;
  4. Buttons of various colors to be used as tokens.

Using the media is not too difficult; it is as follows:

  1. Give out the simulation boards and other equipment (question cards, dice, and buttons);
  2. Determine the first player;
  3. The first player throws the dice;
  4. In accordance with the number on the dice, the student places his/her token on the corresponding square on the simulation board next to the question cards. Other students take turns to ask the questions to the student. The student has to answer the questions;
  5. After the first player has finished, the second player follows on, then the third and so on;
  6. This continues until the time is finished.

As a variation of the game, as well as square with questions on the simulation board, there can be squares with question marks. If a student lands on one of these squares, he/she is asked to make an Imperative Sentence, because the students are already familiar with imperative sentences. In addition to overcoming problems inactivity of some students in learning, the Simulation Board also addresses teachers' needs to create instructional media that are simple and inexpensive but useful and effective.

Consolidating Change in a Madrasah

AFTER working together with DBE3 for about 1.5 years, MTs NU Hasyim Asyari 03 Kudus has made significant changes in learning activities. 'The DBE3 program has inspired us in managing the school and implementing new learning methods,' said Dra. Sri Khayatun, the principal of MTs NU Hasyim Asyari 03. The atmosphere in the classroom already reflects enjoyable learning. This can be seen from the seating arrangements in groups in accordance with cooperative learning methods. To appreciate the work of children in lessons, each class has been provided with display boards. Since joining the DBE 3 many changes have been made in the school. During their lessons students are actively encouraged to express their opinions and work together. Teachers are now increasingly challenged with the various ideas and opinions of students.

Cultivating shange in MTs NU Hashim Asyari 03. Students are actively engaged in group work and discussion to solve problems.

"As school principal, the first step that I took to improve the quality of learning was to improve the computer laboratory and library. After that, we replicated the BTL2 training modules to all the teachers including those who are not teaching the five core subjects. Our goal is to sustain the changes that have occurred in the MTS NU, Hasyim Asyari 03, "said Ibu Khayatun. Of course these changes are a result of the hard work of all the stakeholders in the school, ranging from the school committee, principal of the madrasah, the teachers, other staff and students. "So, thank you to all who have made this madrasah better," said Ibu Khayatun.
