BASIC Competency number 6.2. (Classifying Living Beings Based on Their Characteristics) is really interesting and challenging. The objective of the basic competency is to know and to learn about the variety of plants in our local environment. After studying the basic competency, I chose shrubs and grasses as the main focus and used bamboo, newspaper, rafia, plastic cord, tape, manila card and water as learning media(see media diagram).
|
The activities in the lesson were as follows:
- The students made two bamboo panels to cover the plants (picture 1).
- They also made labels from the card (to write the collection number, name of the plant, and the date).
- They chose the plants (choosing the best ones, picture 2).
- They pulled up the plants carefully so as not to damage the roots. They wrote down information on the names of the plants and the place where they found them (picture 3).
- The washed the plants and dried them (picture 4).
- They wrote the names of the plant on card and put it next the plant (picture 6).
- They observed and wrote descriptions of the plants (picture 5).
- They put the plants on one bamboo panel, which had been covered with newspaper (picture 5).
- After the plants had been arranged, they covered them with the second bamboo panel and tied the panels together with plastic string (picture 7).
- When the plants were dry, students stuck them on to card. They used transparent tape to do this (picture 8).
- The plants were kept in a dry place, away from direct sunshine (picture 9).
- Students wrote a description of the plant on label made of manila card (picture 9).
- If seeds or parts of the plant that had fallen off, these were placed in an envelope affixed near the plant.
- When they were finished, the students put the herbarium into an envelope.
