Turning Trash into Cash

WASTE management is one of the unsolved problems to date. However, in creative hands, trash can be transformed into something highly aesthetic and can even be used to make a living. That is what drives Siti Naisah, S.Pd, a social studies teacher at SMPN I Purwosari, Pasuruan District, to use ‘trash’ as one of the learning themes in her classroom. Students were asked to bring different kind of trash. Student brought coffee packets, old calendars, and even egg shells. Students were then asked to use their creativity to turn the trash into something with value.

Each group worked enthusiastically to create unique products with the trash they had brought from home. According to Siti Naisah, through this kind of learning the students are encouraged to think critically about the problems in their environment. In addition, students are encouraged to explore their creativity by creating something new from the trash. As a result, the students successfully created some functional and valuable hand-crafted goods as well as writing the instructions on how to make them.
