Change at SMPN 13 Purworejo

SMPN 13 PURWOREJO replicated the foundational module, especially BTL 1 in August 2009. Now quite a few teachers apply active learning methods in their classroom, as promoted by DBE3. SMPN 13 Principal, Dra. Sri Iriani, M.M., says that preparing lessons is one of the teachers’ duties. Therefore, there is no excuse for a teacher to say they do not have time to prepare their lessons.

An example comes from Rukmo Wijayanti, S.Pd.Ina, Bahasa Indonesia teacher. Despite the long distance from her home to the school, she always manages to prepare the lessons well for her classes. Ibu Rukmo’s always uses active learning to create a lively learning environment in class.

Ibu Rukmo helping a group of students to learn about short messages or memos. Ibu Rukmo has given students two different short messages and asked the student to work in group to identify aspects of the memo based on an example. Students are then asked to present the results of their discussion and other students give feedback.

Gustami, a Student of SMPN 13 Purworejo:
Active learning makes lessons more understandable. I am proud that my work is displayed and that other students can learn from my work.

This is proof of active learning. Students produce their work using critical thinking. Their work is written in their own language.

Rich Use of Media in SMP 2 Jekulo

ALL OF THE classrooms in SMP 2 Jekulo are more lively because of the displays of students’ work. Most of the teachers teaching Social Studies, Science, Mathematics, Bahasa Indonesia, and English show enthusiasm about DBE3 teaching and learning methods. Teachers encourage students to develop low cost learning media that can be used together with other students to explore the competencies being taught.

Ihda Farida, a Science teacher, says it helped a lot when her students created learning media for the topic of Changes in Energy. The five groups successfully created five different learning media. Other teachers also create media from easily available waste materials. There are so many media and so much students’ work that sometimes the school has trouble keeping them. “I am in the process of preparing a large shelf to keep the media so they will last longer,” said Farhan, M.Pd., Principal of SMP2 Jekulo.

According to pak Farhan, the school is trying to give the best possible service to the students at an affordable price. “God willing, the parents through the school committee will give their support to their children at the cheapest school in Jekulo,” he said.
