Bringing Mathematics Closer to Our Daily Life

Pak Mukhif helping a group of students to measure the length of one rotation of a tyre.

MUKHIF Noor, S.Pd and Tri Eri Prihantini, S.Pd both are Mathematics teachers at SMP 2 Undaan brought a bicycle into the classroom in order to teach mathematics to grade 8 students about the basic competency: how to calculate the circumference and the area of circle. They wanted to teach about length of a single rotation of a bicycle wheel. Why a bicycle? Because it is part of the daily life of the students in Undaan. The teachers wanted to link the lesson to their daily life.

With each group of students using an old tyre the students discussed their work sheet, where they had to measure the circumference and diameter of circles and the length of a wheel rotation. After that, each group wrote a report on their activities and presented it to the class, while the other listened and gave feedback.

Pak Mukhif and ibu Eti used media which were available locally: tyres, tape measures and raffia. By using media, with which the students are familiar, mathematics was not just about learning formulae but became relevant to daily life.

We Have Changed!

That is what Endang Retno Wulan, S.Pd, M.Pd, the principal of SMPN 3 Colomadu, Karanganyar, said about her school. Similar changes have also happened at DBE3 partner schools in nine target districts in Central Java as a result of DBE3 training and mentoring. Several examples can be seen in the photos here.

Using Old Newspapers to Teach Social Relations

Newspapers have no end of uses as a learning resource, as was shown by a Social Studies teacher at MTsN Jeketro. The lesson started with a game where the students had to insert letters to complete words based on a picture from the newspaper to teach the theme ‘associative and disassociative social relationships’. The students competed enthusiastically to complete the series of letters on the blackboard.

Working in groups, the students chose a picture or article about a social theme. Each group had a different article. Using a worksheet given to them by the teacher they held discussions and presented the results of their discussions. What was so pleasing about this activity was that the groups competed to give feedback during the presentation sessions.
