SMPN 8 Bogor Recently Joined DBE3, Already Implementing Many Innovations
SMPN 8 Bogor was trained for the first time by DBE3 in July 2009. The school principal, Ibu Hj. Yani Herliani, S.Pd. , (pictured on the right) has a clear vision and an effective leadership style. As a result she has been able to persuade all her teachers to apply the innovations from the DBE3 program.
The school was used for practical teaching activities during the district facilitator training in West Java and Banten in October 2009. The participants were able to look around the school before the teaching practice started. They were surprised at the cleanliness and tidiness of the school.
In addition, although it was early in the morning, many of the teachers were doing practical activities with students using a variety of media. In her speech welcoming the teachers participating in the training, Ibu Yani joked, “We are an SBI (an international standard school), but in our case SBI stands for ‘sekolah bebas iuran,’ a school that charges no fees!
” But after they had been around the school and seen the interesting and enjoyable lessons taking place, many of the participants probably thought the ‘SBI’ really did stand for ‘an international standard school’ in this case.

The photographs shown here are of the lessons that were taking place, when we arrived at the school. The teachers you can see are the school’s own teachers, not the participants in the teaching practice.
The classrooms are neat and interesting, all the furniture is arranged in groups and the students are used to working cooperatively. There are also displays of students’ work in every class.
Learning aids are used routinely in SMPN 8 Bogor and are used by the students (not only for demonstrations by the teacher!) These students are using spring balances in a mathematics lesson.
Interesting and practical activities are not confined to the core curriculum subjects. The teachers of all subjects have already been trained funded by the school itself. In this music lesson the students are playing musical instruments.
- The students are used to expressing their thoughts, discussing and speaking in front of their friends.
The computer laboratory is well managed and used regularly by the students. All the computers are in working order because there is an effective maintenance system.
The science laboratory is also regularly used for practical activities. Here the students are extracting dyes from vegetables.
