Supporting the National Examination with Service Learning

Test B is a try out of the UN (National Examination) given before the service learning. The mean value of this test is 6.16. There were three students who did not pass the standard. Test A was given after the service learning activity had taken place. Test A1 was given after phase I, test A2 after phase II and test A3 test after phase III. One student failed in test A1. The average value of test A1 is 6.61. All the students passed test A2, with a mean value of 7.36. In test A3, all students passed, with a mean value of 8.13.

During the preparation stage students design the learning activities

"ACTIONS speak louder than words" always resound in Supartinah's head after she was appointed a DBE3 National Facilitator in 2010. She recalled that she learned about 'Service Learning' from DBE3 training, which she then applied in her class in preparation for the National Examination (UN). Supartinah is a teacher at SMPN 1 Karanganyar, Central Java, and is also a DBE3 district facilitator.

Service Learning is a learning process that involves serving, or helping other people. This term is widely used in The United States. In Germany, learning through service is known as 'Learning by Teaching'. There are many things that students can do in Service learning. One of them is where students facilitate the learning of others, especially those in the lower classes. This kind of learning encourages mutual relationships between students. For example, when a year 9 student teaches year 7 students, s/he will benefit from a deeper understanding of learning materials and the year 7 students will benefit from the enjoyable learning process.

The steps in implementing Service Learning in Ibu Supartinah's class were as follow:

  1. Students were divided into smaller groups. Each group consisted of 5 students.
  2. Each group was given the materials needed to facilitate learning. For English, the material was in text form (description, recount, narrative, procedure, report and short functional text)
  3. Students worked in groups to design the lesson they wanted to deliver.
  4. Students presented their work in turns.
"The teacher acts as a facilitator, especially in guiding students in the preparatory stage," Supartinah added. From a simple study that she did, the result of this type of learning is reasonably good, as seen in the table showing increases in scores in the National Examination tryout and the National Examination itself.

Building the Capacity of DFs

APPROACHING the end of the program, DBE3 conducted Refresher Training for district facilitators (DFs). The activity focused on building the capacity of DF to deliver training, mentoring, evaluation, and achieve post-training changes and was carried out in the six partner provinces Materials used in the training included reviewing the basic competencies (KD) followed by a review of the use of worksheets and media, learning activities, assessment and management of students' learning based on the basic competency review. The DFs were also trained to facilitate MGMP activities and to keep reflective journals as the basis for classroom action research. This should help the DFs to disseminate good practices in learning through the MGMP.
